Summertime, and the livin’s easy

Ladies and gentlemen of the RT4T nation, it is finally that magical time of year when the mere contact with the outside weather is enough to cause skin cancer. Yes, that’s right – it’s summertime. Now if you are as broke as everyone else, myself included, most of the summer activities seem impossible to afford. Well I have plenty of experience with empty wallets so making summer fun with next to no funds is a specialty of mine. So check out these outdoor summertime suggestions on cool things to do on a limited budget. In addition, feel free to add suggestions if you know of any affordable things to do with a three month break.

Outdoor Adventures

  • The number one obvious thing to do during the summer, especially in Florida, is to hit the beach. The great thing about the beach is it’s so close and actually not much money to pack up the car and take a beach day. If you are as uncoordinated as me you choose not to try to surf or skimboard; instead, as the picture suggests, I choose to snack on jellyfish. It was a bet, I promise, and I did get paid for it. And because I know everyone is thinking it now, it tasted very squishy. I wouldn’t recommend jellyfish as a snack unless you are really starving.
  • Now one of Lakeland’s greatest unknown gems is Carter Road Park. There are bike trails throughout the whole park, sand dunes to lounge on or to do a backflip off of, and lakes perfect for canoeing.
  • My absolute favorite thing to do outside is walking around downtown Lakeland. Whether checking out the shops, grabbing some lunch at one of the many restaurants, or enjoying the nature around the lake, there are always cheap things to do downtown. In addition, First Friday is a cool, free event to check out on the first Friday of every month.
